Glossary

The short list of terms and abbreviations used across this site and the asset tracking world.

Auto ID
Automatic identification. The family of technologies, including RFID and barcodes, that identify items automatically.
Brownfield
An existing operation upgraded by reusing current infrastructure, as opposed to a new build.
Digital twin
A live digital model of a physical asset or operation, fed by real data.
Edge
Processing done close to where data is created, rather than in a distant cloud.
EPCIS
An event data standard for what, where, when and condition.
ERP
Enterprise resource planning. The core business system that holds records such as inventory. SAP is the common example.
GxP
Good practice. The quality regulations governing regulated pharmaceutical operations.
MRO
Maintenance, repair and overhaul. The aviation and industrial maintenance sector.
OT
Operational technology. The systems that run physical operations, alongside IT.
RFID
Radio frequency identification. Tags read by radio, used to identify assets without line of sight.
Rotable
A repairable high value aircraft part that is removed, overhauled and returned to service.
Store and forward
Holding events locally during a connectivity outage and sending them once the connection returns.
System of record
The single trusted source an operation relies on for a category of data.
WMS
Warehouse management system. The software that runs a warehouse.
